LAB RESCUE
The rescue program began in the early 1990’s as a result of CBC news item showing a yellow Labrador at the Humane Society being euthanized for having kennel cough. As this is a very contagious upper respiratory problem, the shelter did not have facilities at that time to isolate dogs with kennel cough so any dogs who had it were euthanized. Susan Trigg, a club member, asked the club if a rescue type of program could be considered. With the full support of the LRCM members, the program began with the guidance and resources of Lab Breeder/Obedience trainers Grace McDonald and her husband Wayne Bellingham and Susan Trigg the contact person.
In the years following, many Labradors (and a few other dogs!) were rescued, re-homed and even provided with full time jobs. Some of the more ‘energetic’ dogs were placed in detection work, with one chocolate dog working at the Olympic games in Vancouver and a black dog on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.
The program was also supported by Collie Rescue – Safe Haven Rescue and without the love, dedication and sheer fortitude of Hilda Hiebert, many, many more dogs would not have been saved. And Rebel who had been in rescue for a VERY long time, would not have been adopted and living in Hawaii!
We continue to offer support in re-homing Labradors as well as assisting other rescues who may have Labradors in need.
